It's a small town near the city of Palermo at the foot of Monte Pellegrino, originally a small fishing village situated on marshland around an old tonnara and fifteenth-century watchtower of the "fig tree of India" which was part of the warning system of coastal towers of Sicily. With the reclamation of the marsh at the end of the 19th Century Mondello grew into a center of tourism, filling up of numerous Art Nouveau villas. In fact, after reclamation, the Belgian company "Les Tramways de Palermo" obtained from the State property the sale of approximately 280 hectares of land against a range of services and facilities to prepare for the construction of a first-class resort: were so built a grand hotel, the Kursaal, a cathedral, a bathhouse built on piles over the sea, 300 villas, water supply, sewerage, a golf course to nine holes, kiosks, lighting, gardens. Today can be reached directly through the great park of the Favorita or through secondary links directly from the suburbs of the city.
