Taormina

Settled on a hill of the Monte Tauro, Taormina dominates two wide bays below and the top of Mount Etna on the southern side, offering to the visitors a breathtaking view over almost one hundred miles of Mediterranean sea. Sicels, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Saracens, Arabs, Normans and Spaniards chose it as their residential site thank to its favourable position, mild climate and magic atmosphere. Nowadays visitors can still find fine examples of those times: the splendid Greek Theatre, the Roman “Naumachiae”, the 13th century Cathedral of Saint Nicolò, the 14th century Palazzo Corvaja, the 16th century Palace of the Dukes of Saint Stefano, the numerous town gates such as Porta di Mezzo e Porta Catania, the Anglican Church and many others. J.W. Goethe in the world known novel “Italian Journey” describes the beauties of this land and its people and defined Taormina a “patch of paradise”. Wilhelm von Gloeden, a young prussian photographer, settled down in 1880 and made Taormina famous to all conservative European cultural clubs with his artistic portraits of nude sheperd boys with the volcano Etna on the backstage. Since then many important celebrities considered Taormina as the perfect away from chaotic city life: artists and writers such as the already mentioned Goethe, Truman Capote, Salvador Dalì, Edmondo De Amicis, Alexander Dumas, Gabriel Faure, Anatole France, Andrè Gide, Paul Klee, Gustav Klimt, D.H. Lawrence, Guy de Maupassant, Vladimir Nabokov, Luigi Pirandello, Bertrand Russel, Leonardo Sciascia, John Steinbeck, Elio Vittorini, Oscar Wilde, musicians and conductors such as Johannes Brahms, Leonard Bernstein, Nikita Magaloff, Richard Wagner, actors and directors such as Michelangelo Antonioni, Ingmar Bergman, Francis Ford Coppola, Edoardo De Filippo, Marlene Deitrich, Eleonora Duse, Federico Fellini, Greta Garbo, Cary Grant, Marcello Mastroianni, Gregory Peck, Tyrone Power. Visitors can experience a perfect mix of old times charming atmosphere, preservation of history and culture in relaxing walks through the old town pedestrian areas or the fine elegant shopping along the famous Corso Umberto with its classical music cafès and pastry shops.
